Tips on How to Buy and Shop for Authentic Canadian Inuit Art (Eskimo Art) Sculptures

by Clint Leung

Many visitors to Canada will be exposed to Inuit art (Eskimo art) sculptures while touring the country. These are the magnificent hand made sculptures carved from stone by the Inuit artists living in the northern Arctic regions of Canada. While in some of the major Canadian cities (Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa and Quebec City) or other tourist areas popular with international visitors such as Banff, Inuit sculptures will be seen at various retail shops and displayed at some museums. Since Inuit art has been getting more and more international exposure, people may be seeing this Canadian fine art form at galleries and museums located outside Canada too. As a result, it will be natural for many tourists and art collectors to decide that they would like to purchase Inuit sculptures as nice souvenirs for their homes or as very unique gifts for others. Assuming that the intention is to acquire an authentic piece of Inuit art rather than a cheap tourist imitation, the question arises on how does one tell apart the real thing from the fakes? It would be pretty disappointing to bring home a piece only to find out later that it isn’t authentic or even made in Canada. If one is lucky enough to be traveling in the Canadian Arctic where the Inuit live and make their wonderful artwork, then it can be safely assumed that any Inuit art piece purchased from a local northern store or directly from an Inuit carver would be authentic. One would have to be more careful elsewhere in Canada, especially in tourist areas where all sorts of other Canadian souvenirs such as t-shirts, hockey jerseys, postcards, key chains, maple syrup and other Native Canadian arts are sold.

The safest places to shop for Inuit sculptures to ensure authenticity are always the reputable galleries that specialize in Canadian Inuit art and Eskimo art. Some of these galleries have advertisements in the city tourist guides found in hotels. Reputable Inuit art galleries are also listed in Inuit Art Quarterly magazine which is devoted entirely to Inuit art. These galleries will usually be located in the downtown tourist areas of major cities. When one walks into these galleries, one will see that there will be only Inuit art and maybe Native art but none of the other usual tourist souvenirs such as t-shirts or postcards. These galleries will have only authentic Inuit art for sale as they do not deal with imitations or fakes. Just to be even safer, make sure that the piece you are interested in comes with a Canadian government Igloo tag certifying that it was hand made by a Canadian Inuit artist. The Inuit sculpture may be signed by the carver either in English or Inuit syllabics but not all authentic pieces are signed. So be aware that an unsigned piece may still be indeed authentic.

Some of these Inuit art galleries also have websites so you could shop and buy authentic Inuit art sculpture from home anywhere in the world. In addition to these street retail specialty galleries, there are now reputable online galleries that also specialize in authentic Inuit art. These online galleries are a good option for buying Inuit art since the prices are usually lower than those at street retail galleries because of lower overheads. Of course, like any other shopping on the internet, one must be careful so when dealing with an online gallery, make sure that their pieces also come with the official Igloo tags to ensure authenticity.

Some tourist shops do carry authentic Inuit art as well as the other touristy souvenirs in order to cater to all types of tourists. When shopping at these types of stores, it is possible to tell apart the real pieces from the reproductions. Authentic Inuit sculpture is carved from stone and therefore should have some weight or mass to it. Stone is also cold to the touch. A reproduction made of plastic or resin from a mold will be much lighter in weight and will not be cold to the touch. A reproduction will sometimes have a company name on it such as Wolf Originals or Boma and will never feature an artist’s signature. An authentic Inuit sculpture is a one of a kind piece of artwork and nothing else on the store shelves will look exactly like it. If there are duplicates of a certain piece with exact details, the piece is not authentic. If a piece looks too perfect in detail with absolute straight bottoms or sides, it is probably not real. Of course, if a piece features a sticker indicating that is was made in an Asian country, then it is obviously a fake. There will also be a huge price difference between authentic pieces and the imitations.

Where it becomes more difficult to determine authenticity are with the reproductions that are also made of stone. This can be a real gray area to those unfamiliar with authentic Inuit art. They do have mass and may even have some type of tag indicating that it was hand made but if there are other pieces on the shelves that look too similar in detail, they are most likely not authentic. If a seller claims that such as piece is authentic, ask to see the official Igloo tag that comes with it which will have information on the artist, location where it was made and the year it was carved. If the Igloo tag is not available, move on. The authentic pieces with the accompanying official Igloo tags will always be the highest priced and are usually kept in a separate (perhaps even locked) shelf within the store.

Catalogs for Shopping Freaks

by Viojieley Gurrobat

Norin fusses with samples of foundation makeup in a department store. She smears some onto one cheek. Too dark. She wrinkles her nose. The second sample doesn’t look right, either. The saleswoman at the cosmetics counter cleans Norin’s face with a tissue and applies another tone. She turns to her friend, who just shrugs. For the next sixty-five minutes, Norin fingers makeup boxes, dabs lip gloss and gazes at her tanned complexion in the mirror, searching for a new face that will give her a new identity. With Norin’s actions it is evident that people, especially women, are very particular with what they want. They would stop at nothing just to get the right color of lipstick or the right tone of makeup. This is one of the reasons why the need for a better marketing scheme is important for every business. It is important to create name recognition and brand awareness so people would be enticed to purchase their products, thus, reducing the time customers spend in shopping.

Catalogs can be one of the most important sales tool for showcasing your products and services. They can be the tool you can use in announcing to the market what your business is all about. They can be mailed or handed out to prospects and customers. But just like any other marketing material it is essential to create a catalog that best represents the business that you have. Color choices, paper quality and printing techniques are a few of the things you need to consider in producing a good catalog.

You also need to humanize yourself and your catalog by making it seem like the catalog came from friendly and helpful people. This way your prospects will easily trust you and avail of your products. A harmonious layout can also help in creating a professional elegant look to your catalog. And including enough variety can keep the readers interested instead of becoming bored.

Likewise, the photos that you will include in the catalog need to be effectively shot. Good product photos are more than of an art than styling. Remember that readers are likely to keep away from products that they can’t even recognize in pictures. So make an effort to produce pictures that tells the readers what they need to know about the product. And make sure to throw in some extra in your catalog to make your customers happier.

And if you send Norin and other ‘Norins’ out there your catalog, perhaps the next time they think of shopping they’ll have a look at your catalog first and decide if there is something they want there before enduring in another long hours of testing and dabbing tons of makeup in their face.

What Online Gifts Have Come To Mean To The Shopper

by Gina Stathopoulos

Shoppers buying online gifts last year generated $301 billion revenue. Now that shopping on the internet isn’t such a new thing as it once was, consumers feel very comfortable trusting both their credit card details and also that their recipient will receive their gift.Shopping for online gifts rather than going to a store is very enticing…

We save money

In many cases by preferring to buy my gifts online, I’ve seen great savings. Many factors combine so that we shoppers win. The competition, the fact that merchants don’t have the same overheads as offline, and of course, from which country you are shopping from and how strong your country’s currency is.

We save time

These days we work longer hours. The time that we do have to ourselves is very precious. Buying online gifts saves me a lot of time. With all the birthdays I have to shop for and for special occasions it makes my life so much easier.

We have such a large variety of gifts

Where the shops in your area may store some items, online gifts you can find quantity, quality and variety. A good example is nautical jewelry. If you are a big fan like I am, you can find pieces created in such different designs that you won’t run out of choices.

Looking for flowers? or Gift baskets? Same thing. Shop online and choose. The choice is there.

Designers unleash their creativity to give us more

The internet has made it possible for the little guy and girl to unleash their creativity and give us shoppers more of a choice in niche gift products. Many mum and dad business are popping on the internet because the internet gives them the opportunity to do so.

I, along with a heap of my friends, are animal lovers. What better than to give your cat lover friend for her birthday a set of gold cat earrings that look like they are just handing on to her ear lobes… what cuter!

Truth is, I haven’t seen much of a variety in cat and dog jewelry until I started shopping online. Sure, you will get a few, but animal jewelry is a niche kind of gift so your variety offline will be limited. And another truth… I haven’t seen such pieces as sold online that are so eye catching.

Easier to shop for friends and family overseas

Do you remember the days when you used to send cards overseas on special occasions? Those days are gone for me. A card is nice, a gift much nicer. If you want to buy something from your country and send it overseas, it’s the postage that burns a hole in your pocket. Now with so many businesses getting online, choose a local site to the country you want to send you and your gift as well as your thoughts are on their way.

As you see, it’s not difficult for the consumer to see the wide benefits of shopping online and these are my reasons for doing so. I have been sending online gifts for over five years now.
