Why All The Fuss Over Online Shopping?

by Alexandra Warner

I have a friend who recently purchased a home. Shortly after that time, he discovered charges being added to his credit cards. He isn't a big online shopper, so we ruled out the possibility of his being careless with his information online somewhere.

To make a long story short, after a police and credit card fraud department investigation, he found out that his identity had been stolen somewhere in the process of buying his property. He wasn't anywhere near the internet when his identity was stolen.

There are many people who are terrified of the very thought of shopping online, but online shopping offers many benefits that you won’t find when shopping in a brick and mortar store or by mail. For those hardcore shoppers, you can shop at three in the morning, because the internet is always open – seven days a week, 24 hours a day – and bargains are immeasurable online.

If you're one of those people who quivers at the thought of shopping online, here are a few tips to ensure your online shopping safety;

• Use a secure browser. This is the software that you use to get around the Internet. Your browser should comply with industry security standards, such as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). These standards scramble the purchase information you send over the Internet, helping to secure your transaction. Most computers come with a browser already installed. You also can download other browsers for free over the Internet.

• Shop with companies that you know. Anyone can set up shop online under almost any name. If you’re not familiar with a merchant, ask for a paper catalog or brochure to get a better idea of their merchandise and services. Also, determine the company’s refund and return policies before you place your order. These should be posted on the company’s Web site.

• Keep your password(s) private. Be thoughtful when you establish a password, and don’t give it to anyone. Avoid using a telephone number, birth date or a portion of your Social Security number. Instead, use a combination of numbers, letters and symbols.

• Pay by credit or charge card. If you pay by credit or charge card online, your transaction will be protected by the Fair Credit Billing Act. Under this law, you have the right to dispute charges under certain circumstances and temporarily withhold payment while the creditor is investigating them. In the event of unauthorized use of your credit or charge card, you generally would be held liable only for the first $50 of charges. Some companies offer an online shopping guarantee that ensures you will not be held responsible for any unauthorized charges made online, and some cards may provide additional warranty, return and/or purchase protection benefits.

• Keep a record of your transactions. Print a copy of your purchase order and confirmation number for your own records. Also, the Mail and Telephone Order Merchandise Rule covers online orders. This means that unless the company states otherwise, your merchandise must be delivered within 30 days; and if there are delays, the company must notify you.

• Before paying your bills online, evaluate how the company secures your financial and personal information. Most companies explain their security procedures on their Web site. If you don’t see a security description, call or email the company and ask them.

Companies now have the ability to collect information about you and potentially give or sell that information to others. While the Internet can serve as a tremendous resource for information, products, and services, you should be sure to safeguard your privacy online by following these tips.

• Keep personal information private. Don’t disclose personal information – such as your address, telephone number, Social Security number, or email address – unless you know who is collecting the information, why they are collecting it, and how they will use it. If you have children, teach them to check with you before giving out personal – or family – information online.

• Look for a privacy policy on the site. Most companies post their privacy policies in its own section on their Web site. This policy should tell you what information is being collected on the Web site and how that information will be used. Before you provide a company with personal information, check its privacy policy. If you can’t find a policy, send an email or written message to the Web site to ask about its policy and request that it be posted on the site.

• Make decisions. Many companies give you a choice on their web site as to how and whether your personal information is used. These companies allow you to decline – or “opt-out” of having personal information, such as your email address, used for marketing purposes or shared with other companies. Look for this choice as part of the company’s privacy policy.

Post-Holiday Shopping: The Best Time to Buy

by Steve Lassoff

Did you know that shopping after the holidays is the best time of year to buy? When retailers set high sales expectations in December they need to maintain momentum even after Christmas to meet their numbers. For consumers this can mean bigger discounts, longer shopping hours, and new merchandise.

Gift cards are partly responsible for giving shoppers the upper hand. Retailers can’t record sales until gift cards are redeemed. With sales of gift cards at an all-time high, retailers must continue to attract shoppers to recognize the revenue on all of the gift cards they’ve sold. They want shoppers to redeem gift cards as soon as possible after the holidays, so the post-holiday season is designed to draw gift card holders.

Devoted bargain-hunters already know that after-holiday sales are phenomenal. Not only is it a great time to buy some post-holiday gifts for yourself, it’s also a good time to think about buying gifts for friends and family for the rest of the year’s birthdays, graduations, holidays, or other special occasions. I needed a new scarf this winter, but instead of paying full price I waited until January and got one for 65% off.

There are deals online as well. I found a Valentine’s Day Garfield the Cat for my wife that was deeply discounted. If you have teenagers or kids in college, think about getting them a life-size standup. Whether it’s a Beanie Baby, Napoleon Dynamite, funny t-shirt or apron it will be the source of many laughs. And if you shop now you’re sure to find a good deal.

So don’t miss out – post-holiday shopping is the ideal time to buy. By planning ahead you can get all of the gifts you’ll need for the year at prices that you won’t find later. Whether it’s novelty gifts, party favors, scarves, or life-size cardboard cutouts that you need, shop now, not later.

Surety Bond Shopping Tips

by Michael Weisbrot

Usually the first question when a consumer is looking to purchase something is, “What will it cost?”. While cost is obviously important, it is not the only factor that should be considered when purchasing anything, including surety bonds. There are several items you should focus on as well, including, but not limited to: the service of the agency writing the bond, the financial strength of the surety, renewal requirements, and potential for additional surety credit.

Agency Service: An agency that lacks good customer service will be the cause many headaches. I can’t tell you how many accounts we have that left their previous agent in search of better service. I have heard horror stories of people still waiting to receive their bond weeks after they sent in payment. In our eye service that slow is unacceptable. We take pride in our turn around time, as it is the quickest in the industry. We offer instant online approval on many classes of business, while our competition may take a week just to give you a firm quote. When it comes to service, you often get what you pay for. That is not to say JW Surety Bonds is more expensive than the competition, usually the opposite is true due to our exclusive programs.

Surety Financial Strength: Bonding companies financial strength are given letter grades by AM Best. If you are in the market for a contract bond, see if the contract requires a surety with a specific letter grade. The bond is not worth the paper it is printed on if it does not meet the contract specifications. Whether you are looking for contract or commercial bonds, it is a good idea to check to see if the surety is on the Federal Treasury List. The T-List states all of bonding companies acceptable to the federal government. Typically, the first year premium of a bond is fully earned. This means there is no refund if you cancel a bond after issuance. It is vital that you check if a bond is acceptable to the obligee prior to sending in payment.

Renewal Requirements: Bonding companies differ when it comes to bond renewals. Some will request updates on the account, including, but not limited to: business financial statements, personal financial statements, and credit reports. Providing the updates is not only a nuisance for the principal, but also a potential problem. If any of the required updates do not meet the bonding companies guidelines the bond will be canceled, even if you have been with the surety for years. Other sureties will automatically renew the bond without reviewing anything. This is quite an advantage, as there is no annoyance of providing the surety with updates. The greatest advantage is the ability to have a bad year without being dropped, or taking a large owner draw without the surety complaining about a year end net loss.

Potential For Additional Bonds: In general, bonding company underwriting guidelines are rather similar. However, if you compare a more conservative company’s underwriting guidelines to a surety that is hungry for new accounts, the difference can be night and day. Some bonding companies will not write a principal if an owner has under 700 credit, while another surety will allow credit as low as 615 and still provide competitive rates. Due to the volume our agency produces, we can actually offer some classes of business at a standard rate, regardless of credit. The conservative bonding companies will often have low rates due to their strict underwriting and low claim rates. Unfortunately, a downfall of a conservative bonding company is that they also have lower total bonding capacity limits for each particular account than a liberal surety. your potential for additional bonds is important if you are looking to expand your company in a way that will require additional bonds. Our agencies exclusive programs also allow for pre-approval for your bonding needs, a nice comfort to have.

As with anything you purchase, there is more to a bond than simply the cost. Basing your decision simply on cost could present you with service problems or even worse, purchasing a bond that is not acceptable to the obligee. Renewal requirements and total bonding capacity limitations could create problems down the road and are something to discuss with your bond producer.

Tips on How to Buy and Shop for Authentic Canadian Inuit Art (Eskimo Art) Sculptures

by Clint Leung

Many visitors to Canada will be exposed to Inuit art (Eskimo art) sculptures while touring the country. These are the magnificent hand made sculptures carved from stone by the Inuit artists living in the northern Arctic regions of Canada. While in some of the major Canadian cities (Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa and Quebec City) or other tourist areas popular with international visitors such as Banff, Inuit sculptures will be seen at various retail shops and displayed at some museums. Since Inuit art has been getting more and more international exposure, people may be seeing this Canadian fine art form at galleries and museums located outside Canada too. As a result, it will be natural for many tourists and art collectors to decide that they would like to purchase Inuit sculptures as nice souvenirs for their homes or as very unique gifts for others. Assuming that the intention is to acquire an authentic piece of Inuit art rather than a cheap tourist imitation, the question arises on how does one tell apart the real thing from the fakes?

It would be pretty disappointing to bring home a piece only to find out later that it isn’t authentic or even made in Canada. If one is lucky enough to be traveling in the Canadian Arctic where the Inuit live and make their wonderful artwork, then it can be safely assumed that any Inuit art piece purchased from a local northern store or directly from an Inuit carver would be authentic. One would have to be more careful elsewhere in Canada, especially in tourist areas where all sorts of other Canadian souvenirs such as t-shirts, hockey jerseys, postcards, key chains, maple syrup and other Native Canadian arts are sold.

The safest places to shop for Inuit sculptures to ensure authenticity are always the reputable galleries that specialize in Canadian Inuit art and Eskimo art. Some of these galleries have advertisements in the city tourist guides found in hotels. Reputable Inuit art galleries are also listed in Inuit Art Quarterly magazine which is devoted entirely to Inuit art. These galleries will usually be located in the downtown tourist areas of major cities. When one walks into these galleries, one will see that there will be only Inuit art and maybe Native art but none of the other usual tourist souvenirs such as t-shirts or postcards. These galleries will have only authentic Inuit art for sale as they do not deal with imitations or fakes. Just to be even safer, make sure that the piece you are interested in comes with a Canadian government Igloo tag certifying that it was hand made by a Canadian Inuit artist. The Inuit sculpture may be signed by the carver either in English or Inuit syllabics but not all authentic pieces are signed. So be aware that an unsigned piece may still be indeed authentic.

Some of these Inuit art galleries also have websites so you could shop and buy authentic Inuit art sculpture from home anywhere in the world. In addition to these street retail specialty galleries, there are now reputable online galleries that also specialize in authentic Inuit art. These online galleries are a good option for buying Inuit art since the prices are usually lower than those at street retail galleries because of lower overheads. Of course, like any other shopping on the internet, one must be careful so when dealing with an online gallery, make sure that their pieces also come with the official Igloo tags to ensure authenticity.

Some tourist shops do carry authentic Inuit art as well as the other touristy souvenirs in order to cater to all types of tourists. When shopping at these types of stores, it is possible to tell apart the real pieces from the reproductions. Authentic Inuit sculpture is carved from stone and therefore should have some weight or mass to it. Stone is also cold to the touch. A reproduction made of plastic or resin from a mold will be much lighter in weight and will not be cold to the touch. A reproduction will sometimes have a company name on it such as Wolf Originals or Boma and will never feature an artist’s signature. An authentic Inuit sculpture is a one of a kind piece of artwork and nothing else on the store shelves will look exactly like it. If there are duplicates of a certain piece with exact details, the piece is not authentic. If a piece looks too perfect in detail with absolute straight bottoms or sides, it is probably not real. Of course, if a piece features a sticker indicating that is was made in an Asian country, then it is obviously a fake. There will also be a huge price difference between authentic pieces and the imitations.

Where it becomes more difficult to determine authenticity are with the reproductions that are also made of stone. This can be a real gray area to those unfamiliar with authentic Inuit art. They do have mass and may even have some type of tag indicating that it was hand made but if there are other pieces on the shelves that look too similar in detail, they are most likely not authentic. If a seller claims that such as piece is authentic, ask to see the official Igloo tag that comes with it which will have information on the artist, location where it was made and the year it was carved. If the Igloo tag is not available, move on. The authentic pieces with the accompanying official Igloo tags will always be the highest priced and are usually kept in a separate (perhaps even locked) shelf within the store.

Clint Leung is owner of Free Spirit Gallery (www.FreeSpiritGallery.ca) , an online gallery specializing in Inuit Eskimo and Northwest Native American art including carvings, sculpture and prints. Free Spirit Gallery has numerous information resource articles with photos of authentic Inuit and Native Indian art as well as free eCards.

Here is a list of some things to think about and check into when purchasing on e-Bay.

* If a seller is selling multiple identical Balenciaga bags below retail, chances are they are a fake. Again as we stated no two are exactly the same. Replica Balenciaga Handbags * Balenciaga handbags hold their retail value. Even a used bag will easily command over $700. Remember the saying "If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is". * Only the extra tassels that are included with every bag are wrapped in plastic. Nothing else is. The tassels are folded loosely in plastic, not coiled. * The shoulder straps fold seamlessly over themselves at the ends. * All o-rings (ie. where the tassels attach) are welded shut into a seamless circle. Many counterfeit bags have a gap in the o-ring. * Look for the embossed/raised "Lampo" signature on the zippers. Otherwise they are Replica Balenciaga Handbags

Shopping For A Treadmill

by E. Alton Hall

Treadmills are the aerobic exercise machine of choice for good reasons. They are probably the most enjoyable exercise machines, whether you typically like a slow, comfortable walk or a long run. Regardless of your age or fitness level, treadmills are suited for both intense and mild training, and therefore are one of the most effective pieces of exercise equipment you can buy. A study that compared exercisers who worked out equally hard for the same time on several different types of machines found that they generally burned the most calories on a treadmill. Consumer Reports research has shown that they’re less likely to gather dust than other types of exercise machines.

A treadmill is judged in several ways. Before you buy any treadmill, take it for a test run and check for the following attributes. In addition, look at features, such as whether the treadmill offers preset programs, or is capable of "memorizing" a program you’ve created for yourself. Some machines can monitor the user’s heart rate and adjust speed and incline to keep heart rate within a specified range.

The merit of some of these features, like handrails, will vary with the exerciser’s body and motion.

Durability — is evaluated by using a drum with pneumatic "feet" attached. The feet on the rotating drum pound the treadmill to simulate use by a 180-pound person jogging 500 miles — the equivalent of a year’s worth of use by a recreational runner. Then the treadmill is taken apart and examined for damage.

Ergonomics — how the treadmill fits the user — and the machine’s ease of use are also examined. You should be able to use a good treadmill intuitively, or at least without constantly referring to the owner’s manual.

A Thick Deck. The platform on which you’ll run or walk is the machine’s deck. A deck that’s at least three-quarters of an inch thick will stand up best to the impact of running. If you’re short of space, look for a deck that folds up. Make sure you can lift the deck easily and that the latch holds it securely in place.

Wide foot rails. Foot rails are located on either side of the deck. Make sure you can stand on them while you start up the treadmill and that they’re not tilted or wobbly.

Large belt. Look for a belt that’s at least 17 inches wide and 51 inches long. A small belt increases your chances of stepping off accidentally when it’s moving.

Well-designed handrails. They should be close enough to reach if necessary, but they should not get in the way of your swinging arms. They should be cushioned if you plan to hold on while you exercise.

Motor location. Make sure the motor housing is out of kicking range as you walk or run on the treadmill. Also, look for a quiet motor.

Easy-to-use controls. Avoid slide switches or knobs that you have to fiddle with to get to a desired setting.

Stability. Be sure the treadmill doesn’t wobble or creep across the floor.

Minimum incline near zero. Models that don’t level off below 2 percent can make the workout more strenuous than you want.

Useful programs. If you plan to use preset programs, see if you like the variety and can easily select the desired program. Check how the display monitors your progress through the program.

Other Extras. Touches that may help you decide between two otherwise similar machines include trays and stands to hold reading material or a remote control, a nest to rest your water bottle, and a place to safely hang your towel.

Follow these basics and you will end up with a treadmill that will serve you well for years to come. Here’s a toast to your improved fitness!

Projector Buying Tips: The Best Projector Shopping Guide

by Robert Thatcher

Technology has always been known to make people’s lives better. In fact, some surveys said that 8 out of 10 people who were interviewed showed significant representation of people who were relieved to have the best technology in their lives.

One of the primary reasons why technology is deemed as life’s enhancers is because it can unleash the limits set upon the rigidity of previous inventions.

This goes to show that with the new trend of technology, people can expect a better life because it provides a hundred and one ways of making the impossible doable.

Take for example the case of projectors. Before, projectors are known to be used in movie theaters and during business presentations or seminars.

But with the continuous technological advancement and development, projectors are now known to be used even at home. This is especially true to those who want to create a home-based theater of their own.

Technically speaking, projectors work in a way that the visual aspects that are limited on the tube of a television are directly converted into a bigger screen. This is where the graphics and images are unleashed on a bigger view and where space is no longer constrained in a tube.

However, not all projectors are created equal. Therefore, projectors may vary from one model to another. So the only way to get the best item is to know how to effectively buy a good one.

Here is a list of some tips that consumers may use when buying projectors.

1. Know the available type

Basically, there are only tow types of video projectors: the LCP, or the liquid crystal projection, and the tubed. Both of them can function well as far as projection is concerned.

Also, these two kinds of projectors are unique on each sense of functionality that may influence the presentation and setting up of the item.

Each has its own advantages and disadvantages as well. So it is best to do some research regarding this matter so you would only get the best kind of projector.

2. Decide on the magnitude and weight of the projector

There are three available categories of projectors. These are the conference room projectors, ultralights, and the fixed installation projectors.

Each category has its own purpose. So it is better to know the main purpose of using the projector so that you will be able to decide on what weight and size should be bought.

3. The price

As mentioned, not all projectors are created equal, that is why, they may be priced according to the level of their functionality and the way they were manufactured.

Generally, projectors re priced between $1,300 and $9,000. Though, 75% of the available projectors in the market today greatly fall under the $3,500 to $20,000 price range.

The main factors that influence the way projectors are priced are brightness and resolution. Hence, the higher the resolution and the brighter the projector can display images, the higher the price.

4. Consider your needs

When buying projectors, it really pays when the buyer knows what he needs before going to the store. This will make the buying process a lot easier and faster, avoiding the perils of motivations made by persistent salespeople.

The bottom line is that the quality of images that people should expect is reflected upon how they buy items like this. Hence, it is important to always have the initiative to research on the things that bring about the main concept of projectors.

How To Shop For Products Online And Save At The Same Time!

by Jonathan White

What’s one of the most annoying things that you find when shopping online?

One of the most annoying things that I find when shopping online is that when I try to find a product, I have to go to a few sites before I find the product that I am looking for. Once I have found my chosen product, I then have problems comparing this merchants product against other merchants that sell the same product so that I can try to find the best deal for this individual product online.

So if you are also having problems like this when you are also trying to find a product online, then I would personally recommend that you try using some sort of product price comparison search engine/directory. The reasons for this are because these product price comparison search engines/directories list a large amount of products from a large amount of top quality merchants.

By using a product price comparison search engine/directory you can easily find and compare a product of your choice. You can do this by comparing the same product from individual merchants within the same product price comparison search engine/directory that sells the same product so that you can find the best price for your chosen product.

For example, http://www.simplysearch4it.com offers a product price comparison directory that also includes search facilities so that you can narrow down your search for a product of your choice. This product price comparison directory can be found at http://products.simplysearch4it.com where it lists over 1,000,000 products and is still growing daily. You can easily find products from garden equipment to housing goods. Within most product price comparison search engines/directories you can also order your results by price so that you can rank the lower priced products first followed by the highest priced products last.

As you can see, from using a product price comparison search engine/directory first, all you have to do is one search for the product that you want to buy and then you should receive a large number of results. Doing it this way is a lot quicker than going to individual merchants sites doing individual searches for the same product. If the product price comparison search engine/directory doesn’t list the product that you are looking for then you can always search through individual merchants sites after using a product price comparison search engine/directory.

Jonathan White has been involved in online marketing for over three years now and is the Webmaster of http://www.simplysearch4it.com where he also operates the product search at http://products.simplysearch4it.com where you can find and search for well over 1,000,000 products from a large amount of different online merchants.
